Heat is the most obvious red flag. It’s normal for a battery to feel warm during charging or heavy use. But if a battery becomes extremely hot to the touch, it may be defective. Excessive, unexplained heat is not normal. Stop using it immediately.

Swelling or bulging is one of the most serious warning signs. A battery that looks swollen or misshapen is failing. You might notice the device casing cracking, bulging, or coming out of alignment. Never attempt to “deflate” a swollen battery by puncturing it—the gas inside is both highly flammable and toxic.

Unusual smells or sounds are also major red flags. Failing lithium batteries may produce a sweet, metallic, or chemical odor that indicates internal damage. They can also make hissing, cracking, or popping sounds. If you hear or smell anything unusual, unplug the device immediately.

Other warning signs include leaking fluid, discoloration, changes in battery color, or noticeably longer charging times. Smoke means a fire has already started—evacuate immediately.

What Is Thermal Runaway and Why It Matters

Thermal runaway is the chain reaction that makes lithium battery fires so dangerous. When a battery is damaged, overcharged, or exposed to extreme temperatures, internal chemical reactions accelerate uncontrollably. The battery overheats, releases flammable and toxic gases, and can burst into flames that are extremely difficult to extinguish.

This process can happen very quickly. Once thermal runaway starts, the fire is self-sustaining—it doesn’t need oxygen from the air to keep burning. That’s why these fires spread rapidly and produce toxic smoke that can be deadly even in small amounts.

Thermal runaway can be triggered by physical damage like drops, punctures, or crushing; electrical damage from using the wrong charger or overcharging; extreme temperatures; or manufacturing defects. The key point: once you spot warning signs, you’re running out of time.

How to Buy a Safe Lithium Battery

Most dangerous lithium batteries are counterfeit, uncertified, or cheaply made products. The safest way to avoid a dangerous lithium battery starts at the moment of purchase.

Always look for safety certification marks. UL certification means the product has met rigorous safety standards. Look for a “UL” mark in a circle, or “CE” for European markets. Other recognized certifications include CSA and ETL. Counterfeit products sometimes bear fake marks, so buy directly from the original manufacturer whenever possible.

A genuine battery from a reputable brand costs more for a reason. Authentic OEM batteries undergo extensive safety testing. Cheap knockoffs often lack proper internal protection against overcharging and overheating. In the UK, retrofitted or converted e-bikes were involved in battery fires more frequently than officially manufactured models. The same principle applies to every device—stick with trusted brands.

For shipping, look for UN38.3 certification—this indicates the battery has passed transportation safety tests. If you’re buying online and the price seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Charging Habits That Keep You Safe

How you charge a lithium battery matters as much as what you buy. Poor charging habits turn safe batteries into dangerous lithium batteries over time.

Always use the charger that came with your device. Using a different charger—even one that fits—can deliver the wrong voltage and cause overheating. Never charge a battery with damaged cables or connectors.

Charge on hard, flat surfaces only. Never charge devices on beds, couches, carpets, or pillows. Soft surfaces trap heat and can cause batteries to overheat and catch fire. Charge on a countertop, desk, or other non-flammable surface.

Keep batteries at moderate temperatures. Ideal charging temperatures are between 40°F and 104°F (4°C to 40°C). Never leave devices charging in direct sunlight or inside a hot car. Don’t charge overnight or leave devices plugged in when you’re not home. Stop charging once the battery is full—overcharging is a major cause of thermal runaway.

Store batteries away from anything flammable and away from exit routes. If you store spare batteries, keep them in a cool, dry place and tape the terminals to prevent short circuits.

What to Do When Things Go Wrong

If a battery shows warning signs but hasn’t caught fire, turn off the device and unplug it immediately. If it’s safe to do so, move the device to a non-flammable surface outdoors, away from buildings and people. Do not touch a swollen or leaking battery with bare hands—the heat or chemicals can cause severe burns. Call the manufacturer or retailer for instructions. Report faulty batteries to the appropriate consumer safety authority.

If a battery starts smoking or catches fire, get out immediately. Do not try to put out the fire yourself. Lithium battery fires spread fast and produce toxic smoke. Evacuate the area, close doors behind you if possible, and call emergency services. Alert others nearby.

Never throw lithium batteries in the trash or regular recycling. Damaged batteries can catch fire in garbage trucks or at landfills. Take them to designated battery recycling drop-off locations. For damaged or swollen batteries, call your local waste authority for special handling instructions.
